Why You Don't Want to Tow
a
Miata Behind Your RV
(Or anything else for that matter)
The Miata is a fun little car whose appeal reaches across all age
groups. An ever increasing number of people, mostly retired, see the Miata
as the perfect little car to tow behind their RV on their cross country
trips.
While it might seem that the Miata is the perfect little car to be seen
following your RV, the problem is the Miata isn't designed for it and
worst yet, towing a Miata with all four wheels on the ground (yes - even
with the transmission in natural) will cause serious damage to it.
With extensive modification to the rear wheels the Miata can be towed for
long distances without damage.
Basically you need to come up with some way to keep the wheels from
turning the drive shaft and thus the transmission. Either install a quick
disconnect for the drive shaft or manual hubs on the two rear wheels that
would allow you to disconnect the wheels from turning the rear trans axle.
I'll do some research to see what is involved and post the information
here at a future date.
