Radio Codes

To Err is Human

More and more Miatas are being bought used and in most cases the new owner must deal with the dreaded "Radio Codes" in the event of a loss of power. We have heard reports of dealers telling Miata owners that the radio must be replaced or charging $50 to $100 to "fix" the radio.
Below are the "secret codes" needed to unlock your radio if you should see the "Err" code on the front panel.  Good Luck

For most 1990 - 1996 factory radios:

To determine if this radio has been set with an anti-theft user code, remove battery power from it for at least 45 seconds. When battery power is restored with no user code set, the radio's operation is immediately restored. If a code is set "cod e" flashes in the radio's display.
When "cod e" flashes in the radio's display after battery power is restored, and you know your anti-theft user code, the radio's operation can be restored by following your Owner's Manual "If Anti-theft system is Activated" procedure. If you don't know your anti-theft user code, or to remove one previously set, follow the same procedure three times entering an invalid 1 to 4-digit user code each time. Once an invalid 1 to 4-digit user code is entered three times, "err" flashes in the radio's display. When flashing "err" displays, the radio is now set to accept the following re-set procedure.
  1. Press the # 1 button
  2. Press Stop/Eject
  3. Press Am/Fm
  4. Press Clock Button
    -- -- -- -- Will appear.
  5. Enter code 4 9 8 9
  6. Press F/Forward & Reverse at the same time and hold for a couple seconds.
  7. The code should now be removed. Follow the instructions in your manual to set a new code.
1 - When the power supply is disconnected or interrupted the anti-theft system is activated and the unit is rendered inoperative.
2 - To deactivate the anti-theft system and reset the audio unit, input your personal code number. Press REW and FF until bars are displayed
3- While the bars are displayed, input the code number as described in the setting procedure.
4 - Press REW and FF approximately 2 seconds until a beep is heard and "c o d e"  is displayed. "c o d e" will flash for 5 seconds, then disappear to indicate that the system is operable. If Err (error) appears, begin from step #1.
