The WestCo sealed battery for the Miata is a true sealed absorbed glass mat battery (AGM), the same type of battery technology that has become standard with all new Mazda Miatas since their introduction. The WestCo sealed battery is a completely liquid-free design, offering zero corrosion, no maintenance and high cranking amperage.

If you go to Mazda to get a new factory "replacement" battery it is not the same as the original. Replacement batteries from Mazda are conventional flooded wet cells. It is older, less expensive technology, and a design which over time, could leak and corrode your trunk.  In additional, "wet" batteries have a much faster self-discharge rate then sealed AGM batteries of similar capacities.
